Halina Sewiya is an orphanage to be established in Kurdistan Region / Iraq. DAK will operate the institution which will be financed by individual donations of Iraqi citizens and permanent subsidies by Christlich-Ezidische Gesellschaft e. V. in Germany.
Facing the big amount of displaced people and with them orphans after the attack of Islamic State the intention of this institution is purely humanitarian without any political, economic, or proselytizing interests. The only aim of this orphanage is the well-being of the children if there is the necessity for alternative care.
Halina Sewiya will offer children for the full time of their childhood and adolescence a safe and reliable provision, stable and affectionate care, and schooling. This includes accommodation, clothing, nutrition, daily needs, health care, and school attendance. The breeding by the staff, living together like a family, and the relations to the community shall result in maturation according to age, stable personalities, and healthy minds, in spite of the traumatic past of the children. They shall accomplish school and later professional training and eventually start a family themselves.
Halina Sewiya respects the orphan´s cultural background and intends to make the children active contributors to their home country.
The site of Halina Sewiya will probably be in Sharia. A suitable building is looked for and will then be reconstructed. There should be eight rooms, kitchen, and a bathroom, at least.
Crucial for the concept are four women being prepared to become part of the project as staff for a long time – ideally as long as the children will grow. In mind are widows possibly with children of their own, to whom working with Halina Sewiya will provide social security. Probably they will be no pedagogic professionals, but they will have experience of life and the knowledge of a Kurdish housewife and mother at their command. Persons of suitable character will be chosen. Those who would not be able to a caring and stable education of the children possibly due to their own trauma, should not be employed. Training of these persons will be provided by specialist of SOS Children´s Villages.
To each of these women five children including possible own ones will be related to live together permanently like a family. Such a family should be mixed in age and sex. Biological brothers and sisters should be kept together. Aim is to establish stable relations between children living together like brothers and sisters and between them and their “Aunt”. Remembrance of the dead parents or contact to possible distant relations should not be hindered. With entry of the orphans into Halina Sewiya everybody concerned including distant relatives must agree upon the decision that long-time care in Halina Sewiya is the best place for the well-being of the child.
Each of the four groups leads their everyday life autonomously in the rooms assigned to them. Of course, cooperation in cooking, common meals, house maintenance, homework, or leisure activities are possible. The staff, living in the institution themselves, will support each other and act for another in case of a short absence. DAK will provide a budged weekly or monthly to each of the staff to cover the “family” expenses which will be balanced later.
DAK will decide on the children accepted for Halina Sewiya according to suggestions of the administration and other specialists. The individual need for care, the close contact of brothers and sisters, and in cases the agreement of relatives have to be considered.
